He said writing for a musical is “way, way, way different” than focusing on hit songs. His partnership with Vallance provided the catalogue that helped catapult Adams, during the ‘80s, into the stratosphere of rock’s elite as Canada’s first truly global superstar - and more recently, the pair toiled on providing songs for the Broadway production of 2019’s “Pretty Woman: The Musical,” one of which - “I’ve Been Looking For You” - appears on “So Happy It Hurts” because, as Adams said, “I’m not one to let a good song go.” In fact, his predominant co-writers on “So Happy It Hurts” include the three he’s been most closely associated with: Nashville-based Gretchen Peters (Martina McBride’s “Independence Day,” Faith Hill’s “The Secret Of Life”) South African-born Robert John “Mutt” Lange” and the person with whom he’ll be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in September, Jim Vallance. And that sort of becomes the germ that causes the pandemic.”Īnd Adams has certainly co-written his share of infectious earworms: “Run To You,” “Summer of ‘69,” “Everything I Do (I Do It For You),” “Kids Wanna Rock,” “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?,” “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started,” the list seems endless. And by lyric ideas, I’ll come up with two lines of lyric that seem to make sense together. One of them ended up being ‘So Happy It Hurts.’” When the opportunity came, I just redid them. “About a year before the lockdown, I had the foresight to go to the studio and put down three or four ideas as rough tracks - things that I’d started, but hadn’t really worked on properly. “When the lockdown happened, I couldn’t do what I usually do, which was either sit in a room and knock songs around with whoever I’m gonna write with - and I couldn’t get my band together. “It was the opportunity to finally take everything out of my coat pockets and just look at what I had jotted down,” Adams said. But at 94, it’s just a little more difficult to move around.” “She’s a lot of fun and if it was up to her, she’d be at every gig, every video, every recording session. “I don’t know if you noticed in the video, but she sort of does this move at the beginning where she slightly turns her head toward the camera and it’s like that classic scene: ‘I’m ready for my close up, Mr. “She needs no encouragement, honestly,” Adams chuckled. And I always thought it’d be fun to have her in a video and this, this was the right opportunity.”Īdams said after she agreed to appear in the video, she was a natural. When your parents get to a certain age, you just wanna be close to them. “We call her ‘The Legend.’ You know, my mom is gonna be 94 next week and I’m heading back to celebrate her birthday with her. “Yeah, that’s the legend,” Adams said Tuesday night over Zoom from Berlin.
